CESARE BERLINGERI
He was born in Cittanova (RC) in 1948 and began painting at a very young age. In 1968, he traveled extensively across Europe, immersing himself in contemporary culture. In the 1970s, he moved to Rome, where he worked as a set designer and costume designer for theater and television. In 1975, he held his first solo exhibition in Florence at the AxA gallery, and in 1978, he had his first solo show in Rome at Galleria Soligo. In 1986, he was invited to the 11th Quadriennale di Roma. His "folded paintings" were introduced to the public in 1990, after his encounter with Tommaso Trini, in the solo exhibition Opere recenti. Over the years, he participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions featuring his new works. The La Polena gallery in Genoa dedicated a solo show to him called Viaggi. For the Mudima Foundation, he created a large wall installation titled Piegare la notte (1994). In 1999, alongside the Piegature, small paintings on lead were also shown. At Mudima, he also displayed large canvases marked with charcoal, where “figurative elements, almost human signs, shadows of presences, and moving cycles” emerged, as described by Tommaso Trini, who later curated a major monograph on the artist published by Skira in 2003.In 2003, he exhibited at the Mole Vanvitelliana in Ancona, and the same year, he was invited by the Municipality of Padua to hold a solo exhibition at the stables of Palazzo Moroni. In 2005, the Calabria Region promoted two important exhibitions: the first was a rich retrospective at the Castello Aragonese in Reggio Calabria titled La pittura piegata (The Folded Painting), and the second, Materia 1975-2005, curated by Philippe Daverio, was held at the Monumental Complex of S. Giovanni in Catanzaro. In 2006, he unveiled a new series of works titled Corpi (Bodies), which was also the title of his solo exhibition at Mudimadrie in Antwerp. These "bodies" were made of air, enveloped by a smooth surface. In 2007, a traveling exhibition of around 200 works documented his artistic journey from the 1960s onward. The exhibition stopped at the MAC Museum in Goiania, the MAM Museum of Modern Art in Salvador de Bahia, and the MAM Museum of Modern Art in Rio de Janeiro. He was invited to the 57th Premio Michetti - Laboratorio Italia in Francavilla al Mare, curated by Philippe Daverio, in 2006. Between 2008 and 2012, his works were exhibited in numerous Italian galleries and institutions, including the University of Calabria, CAMS (Center for Arts, Music, and Performance), the 11th International Cairo Biennale, the Anniart 798 Factory in Beijing, and Studio Lattuada in Milan. In 2012, the Rocco Guglielmo Foundation, the Rotella Foundation, and Vecchiato Art Galleries organized an exhibition titled Ghiacci ed ombre (Ice and Shadows) at the Casa della Memoria and the Church of Sant'Omobono in Catanzaro, curated by Marco Meneguzzo. At the end of the year, he held the solo exhibition Andar per stelle (Walking Among the Stars) as part of the RAM festival at the Centro Culturale Alinate San Gaetano in Padua, curated by Luca Beatrice. For this installation, he collaborated with Japanese musician KK Null (Kazuyuki Kishino). He continued to participate in prestigious group exhibitions, and in 2015, he took part in Artisti nello spazio: da Lucio Fontana ad oggi: una storia dell’arte ambientale italiana (Artists in Space: From Lucio Fontana to Today: A History of Italian Environmental Art) at the San Giovanni Complex in Catanzaro, curated by M. Meneguzzo, B. Di Marino, and A. La Porta, as well as the Rigorismo exhibition at the Italian Cultural Institute in New York, in collaboration with the Arte Centro Lattuada Gallery. In 2014, an important solo exhibition titled Compenetrazione (Compensation) was held at the National Gallery of Palazzo Arnone in Cosenza, where the artist created installations in relation to works by 17th-century masters. In 2018, his major monograph was presented at Palazzo Reale in Milan, published by Prearo and curated by Maurizio Vanni and Tommaso Trini. Monographs on his work have also been published by Electa, Rubettino, Silvana Editoriale, and Skira.
